I Founded an Awareness Month. I Didn’t Plan To.
How a sentence I asked sixteen women to finish became a movement with a home in the calendar.
I was updating my marketing calendar.
That’s how it started. Not with a grand vision or a carefully considered strategy. Just a Wednesday afternoon, Trello, and a quiet sense that September needed to mean something this year.
And somewhere between planning content pillars and checking dates, I looked up and realised I’d founded a global awareness month.
I’m still slightly amazed that I’m writing that sentence.
Let me take you back to where it actually began.
Earlier this year, for International Women’s Day, I asked women to send me a short video finishing one sentence:
“This is Midlife by Design, not by default, because…”
I didn’t know what would come back. I hoped for a handful of responses. What I received was sixteen women, from different countries, with different stories, in different seasons of midlife, each one standing in her own life and naming, out loud, something she had quietly known for a long time.
That this chapter is asking something of her, and that she is finally, finally ready to answer it on her own terms.
I sat with those videos longer than I expected.
Not because they were dramatic, but because they weren’t. They were ten seconds of ordinary honesty. A woman in her kitchen. A woman at her desk. A woman somewhere I didn’t recognise, in a life I’d never seen, finishing a sentence I’d written, and making it completely, unmistakably hers.
That’s what got me.
The moment a woman stops defaulting and starts designing doesn’t look like a transformation. It doesn’t announce itself. It doesn’t arrive with clarity, confidence, and a five-year plan.
It looks like a woman finishing a sentence she’s been afraid to start.
I’ve been building Midlife by Design for a year now.
Writing about it, coaching within it, podcasting from inside it, living it, imperfectly, honestly, sometimes loudly and sometimes in the quiet hours before anyone else is awake. All of it rooted in one belief that I keep returning to, that I keep finding to be true in every conversation, every coaching session, every essay that lands in someone’s inbox on a Sunday morning:
Midlife is not something that happens to you. It is something you can choose to design.
Not perfectly. Not all at once. Not without grief or confusion or the particular exhaustion that comes from finally, finally being honest about what you actually want.
But consciously. On purpose. On your own terms.
That belief has always been the heart of this work. What it needed, what I didn’t fully understand until a Wednesday afternoon with a Trello board, was a home in the calendar.
So, this September, and every September from now on, is Midlife by Design, Not by Default Month.
An annual observance. A cultural reframe. A dedicated space in the year for the questions that midlife actually asks, not the ones we’re told to ask.
Am I designing this chapter, or just arriving at it?
What am I carrying that was never mine to carry?
What would I build if I stopped waiting for the right conditions?
What does a life that actually feels like mine look like, now, in this season, with this body, in this particular and irreplaceable life?
These are not small questions. They are the questions midlife asks every woman, eventually. This month is an invitation to ask them on purpose.
Why September?
September is the start of autumn. The season of shedding.
Leaves don’t apologise for falling. They let go of what no longer belongs to them and, in doing so, make space for what comes next. The going inward through winter. The re-emergence in spring.
I wanted this month to live inside that rhythm, not because it’s poetic, but because it’s true. September is when something in us shifts. The light changes. The pace changes. There’s an inward pull that has nothing to do with the calendar and everything to do with the season.
This is when we take stock. This is when we ask the harder questions. This is when we begin, slowly, honestly, without fanfare, to redesign.
What happens every September
Five weeks. Five pillars of a consciously designed midlife. Each Tuesday, an essay, my voice, the pillar, the questions it raises and the things I’m sitting with alongside you.
Each Friday, a conversation, a pre-recorded interview with a guest whose work lives inside one of the five areas we explore: identity and self-discovery, health and well-being, relationships and connections, money and purpose, and quality of life.
Not a programme. Not a challenge. Not a transformation package with a checkout page.
Just an honest conversation, every September, about what it looks like when a woman decides her next chapter is hers to design.
And this is the part where I need you.
Because the most powerful thing about this month won’t be what I write or who I interview. It will be the chorus. The one that started with sixteen women on International Women’s Day and that I am asking, hoping, will grow into something far bigger than that.
Every September, I invite women everywhere to share:
“I’m letting go of ______. I’m building ______.”
In a short video. A caption. A note. A sentence scribbled in the margin of your journal that you decide, on a whim, to share with the world.
However it comes, wherever you are, whatever your version of midlife looks like right now, add your voice to it.
Use #MidlifeByDesignNotByDefault and let it be heard.
Details on how to submit a short video for the campaign are coming very soon. Watch this space.
I started Midlife by Design a year ago.
I didn’t expect it to become this, this quickly. But I’ve learned, and maybe you have too, in your own way, in your own life, that the things we build from the most honest part of ourselves have a way of growing beyond what we planned for them.
This is one of those things.
The page is live. The calendar entry is made. The awareness day directories have been submitted.
And somewhere, right now, there is a woman who doesn’t yet know that this month exists, who will find it in September, read the campaign prompt, and finish that sentence for the first time.
I’m building this for her. And for you. And for the sixteen women who started it all, standing in their kitchens and at their desks, finishing a sentence they’d been waiting to say out loud.
Every September. For women designing their next chapter on purpose.

The public home for Midlife by Design, Not by Default Month is live at kiransinghuk.com/midlife-by-design-not-by-default-month
If this movement resonates, if you believe midlife deserves to be lived on purpose rather than by default, the best place to be part of it is inside the work itself.
The Midlife Circle is where the deeper conversation lives, week by week, season by season. From £19/month or £149/year.
And the Midlife Inner Circle at £297/year is for the woman who is done observing from the outside and is ready to begin, with audio training, The Midlife Reset course, and quarterly 1:1 calls with me.
September is coming. Come and be inside it properly.

I participated in your video in March, I just looked back at it Kiran and it was so much fun to look back at myself at months ago. So many things happened on Substack for me since then...
Beautiful memories!
Curious about what you are exactly planning!
What I love about this is that you didn’t create a campaign. You created a conversation.
Midlife can feel surprisingly isolating because so many of the questions we’re asking are happening quietly inside our own heads. The power of seeing women from different countries, different lives, and different circumstances answering the same prompt is the reminder that we’re not reinventing ourselves alone.
“Not by default” may be the most important part of the phrase. So much of midlife is realizing that many things we accepted by default can still be redesigned by choice.
I am genuinely impressed by what you have done here.
You created a space for women to see themselves in one another, and that is no small thing.
